What is your passion? Is this a difficult question? Are you struggling with it or did a dozen things pop in your head? Let’s say that you couldn’t think of anything. Why? What does that mean? Have you ever thought about the fact that you are living your life and don’t know what your passion is? On the other hand let’s say you have thought of a dozen things that you are passionate about. Are you able to focus on those? If you know what you passion is what did you do today to live your passion?
Why is important to have a live with passion? Why is important to follow your passion? If you are working at a job you hate you have stress, if you are working at something you enjoy then you have a passion. Do you get up every morning looking forward to the day or first thing in the morning do you think, “Oh, no, another day at working at that place”?
Everyday we do have to do things we don’t enjoy, like taking out the garbage. However, you have a choice whether you spend all day everyday feeling like you are taking out the garbage. If you don’t know what your passion is, that may be why you are still doing something you hate. You may be afraid to follow your passion even though you may know exactly what you are passionate about. What is holding you back? You are holding yourself back. Yes, you may have to make some difficult decision, give up something and work hard to get where you can follow your passion but what are the benefits?
Are you the person who when asked comes up with a dozen ideas of what you are passionate about but you don’t follow it? Often clients will report that they are extremely passionate about a laundry list of things, everything from art, music, cooking, building a business, going back to college, changing the world, etc. However, when I tell them that’s amazing that they have so much vision and ask them to tell me how they spend their time they are doing nothing that relates to what there passions are. I asked them, “Why aren’t you following your passions?” “Why aren’t you spending time on things you enjoy doing?” They have as more excuses as they do a list of things they feel passionate about. Many people will say, “It’s just not the right time because…” If you are waiting for everything to perfect to start living your life following your passion, you will never get there. There is no perfect time.
There will always be costs in following your passion. You will have to change and you may be met with resistance from others and criticism. You have to ask yourself what you really want out of life. Do you want to make other people happy or follow your passion? When I went back to school to get my degree in Psychology at age fifty two I met with a lot of resistance and criticism. I was fortunate to have others who support and believe in my passion for learning. But the most important thing was that I believe in myself and that I was to follow my passion.
If you are struggling with determining what your passion is or how to live with passion, get some one on your side. Find someone to walk through the process of moving forward and making the changes that will help you live your passion. I help client everyday discover their passion so they can’t wait to get up in the morning and do what they love. Life is too short to do anything else.
