“I have a dream.” Martin Luther King made that beautiful speech which inspired millions at the time, and continues to inspire millions today. Do you have a dream? I ask my clients about their goals for therapy and most often they can list at least three or four things they want to fix in their lives. They usually start with all the things that are wrong, what they do wrong or what someone else does to them. However, when I ask them the simple question, “Do you have a dream?” they look at me like I have two heads.
I believe this comes from our misconception that as adults we have to stop dreaming. When we express our dreams we hear comments like, “Get you head out of the clouds!” or “What world are you living in?” Why do we believe we have to stop dreaming and live in the real world? Unfortunately, as we go through life we start a list of our failures and every time we have a thought about pursuing a dream or challenging ourselves, we pull out that list and review it. That is part of our limited belief system.
When I decided at age 47 to go back to school, and earn a degree I heard much criticism. Fortunately, I had enough of those who supported me and at that point in my life I had overcome so many obstacles that I didn’t listen to the negative comments. Another part of my DNA was that I was stubborn. If someone told me that I couldn’t do something that is exactly what I did.
Today I still have dreams. My husband and I are senior citizens but we still have dreams for the future. It keeps us moving forward and helps us get up in the morning. When we were in the middle of raising our three children we focus most of our planning and dreaming on the future of our children. We put our own dream aside and fulfilled our obligations. Sometimes parents forget that they need a life outside of being a parent and stop dreaming.
Think about what you wanted to do when you were a child. Did you have some idea about flying to the moon or being a movie star or maybe just being a cowboy? As a child our vision for ourselves is limitless and we see all possibilities. I hope you will give yourself a chance to step out of your comfort zone, ignore the skeptics and dream. Let your imagination go wild and set your sights high. The only thing that is stopping you is your own belief system. Enjoy!
